1. About
  • 1.1 The company

    Faeroes produces exceptional contemporary rainwear through a combination of modern design and heritage manufacturing.

    Collections are produced in limited batches available to pre-order online or buy at selected stockists.

  • 1.2 The name

    FAEROES
    (pl. noun) also written Faroes;
    pronounced /‘fɛərəʊz / as in ‘pharaohs’. See also: Faroe Isles or Faroese.

    A collection of 21 basalt islands in the North Atlantic. In 1932, this self-governing community gave their name to the British shipping forecast location between Southeast Iceland and Fair Isle. Known as the ‘land of maybe’ it is not uncommon to experience all four seasons in one hour.

  • 1.3 The shipping forecast

    "There are warnings of gales in all areas except Biscay and Trafalgar. Tyne, Dogger, Fisher, German Bight: Southwest 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8 in Dogger. Rain or showers. Moderate or good, occasionally poor."

    The shipping forecast has been a hallmark of British culture for over a century and is tinged with a collective and personal nostalgia.

    Broadcast four times daily on BBC Radio, this poetic litany of coastal regions is cherished by both sailors and landlubbers alike. It tells of turbulent pewter skies, featureless white fog, and driving black clouds making their way over the Atlantic; a punctual reminder of our island status and the weather systems that surround us.

    In true British form these adverse conditions are often met with stoicism and a sense of pride. Whilst other lands may be blessed with sunnier climes, these are the Isles of rain and fog whose joy can be found in the beauty of a painted watercolour sky, the patter of raindrops on foliage overhead, or the scent of damp cold earth underfoot. Indeed, there is a strange allure to this unpredictable and varied climate, a subtle yet romantic drama borne out by our enduring love affair with the weather and an island made glorious by more than just sun.

2. Collections

3. Made in Britain
  • 3.1 The factory

    The mackintosh raincoat has been made in Britain since 1824. Today this heritage rainwear continues to be made by hand in a factory just outside Glasgow, Scotland.

  • 3.2 Bonded cotton

    The distinction of a genuine mackintosh. This waterproof cotton fabric was invented by Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh and is still produced by the original family mill in Manchester, England.

  • 3.3 Marking

    The garment patterns are first arranged over the material and carefully marked up by hand. This stage is important for minimising waste and maintaining the correct grain lines within the fabric.

  • 3.4 Cutting

    Tailors shears are then used to cut out the individual sections. This simple tool gives the greatest accuracy, allowing the pattern cutter to navigate the complex and often intricate lines of the garment.

  • 3.5 Glueing

    Edge seams must be individually treated to repel water prior to sewing. This is done using a natural rubber solution loaded onto the index finger and ‘smeared’ with just the right amount of pressure and glue.

  • 3.6 Taping

    Once constructed, exposed interior seams are covered and pressed with bonded cotton tape, creating a beautifully clean and fully-waterproof finish. Curved sections such as the arm holes and collar require particular skill and take many years to master.

  • 3.7 Finishing

    Excess glue is removed and press fasteners, underarm eyelet vents, and labels are added. Each garment is finally quality checked by the craftsmen who made it before leaving the factory floor.

  • 4.1 Craftsmanship

    We are committed to preserving British craftsmanship, employing traditional techniques learnt and refined over generations. This heritage is our legacy and where our modernity lies.

  • 4.2 Sustainability

    Waste
    Up to 85% of clothing ends up in landfill each year, 30% of which was never sold. As a result, our collections are pre-ordered to size and produced in limited production runs to minimise waste. We do not carry stock and would much rather undersell than overproduce.

    Packaging
    We do not use single use plastics and all our packaging is recyclable. Invoices, return labels and other material will be emailed unless specifically requested in print form.

    Emissions
    We have partnered with UK based charity Trees For Cities to offset all our carbon emissions. We are now working to go a step further in creating a ‘positive’ carbon impact, using business to benefit the environment rather than taking from it.

    Longevity
    The most sustainable way to live is to buy less and reuse more. Our products are made to the highest possible standards and covered by our lifetime repair programme to extend their use. Should a product be irreparable we will recycle it for you, reusing any available fabric and providing a credit towards future products.

    Perfection is attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away. We believe wholeheartedly that less is more.

    Good design can transform peoples' lives by fulfilling a purpose. Our purpose is to make clothing to withstand the elements. This comes above all else.


5. Pre-order
  • 5.1 How it works

    Pre-ordering is the reservation of an item that has not been produced yet but will be soon. It helps minimise the environmental impact of unwanted stock as only the required sizes and colours are made.

    Each collection will contain a limited number of units, some of which will be available to pre-order online at faeroes.co.uk. These will be offered on a first come first serve basis for a 1 week period.

    Once pre-orders have closed and production is complete, the remainder of the collection will be available to buy at selected stockists. These products are the same as pre-ordered items but will have the added mark up costs associated with high street retail.

  • 5.2 When is the next launch?

    The next launch date is yet to be confirmed.

    Subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on Instagram to be kept up to date. Members of our newsletter will receive insider access to releases before the general public.

  • 5.3 Pricing online

    Pre-order items will be offered at a reduced price to reflect the additional wait times and minimal costs of online selling. This will be around 50% of the RRP in stores.

    Our prices include VAT and all other associated taxes in the UK, Europe, United States and Japan. For further information on import duties and taxes outside of these areas, please see our shipping and returns policy.

  • 5.4 How to place a pre-order

    Pre-orders can be placed directly on faeroes.co.uk by selecting your product and size and confirming the purchase at checkout by entering your bank details.

    The product page will be available to view before the launch so you can make a decision on the appropriate size and colour way. You will need to refresh the page once the pre-order launch goes live.

    Pre-orders will be debited from your account at this point to pay for production but you may cancel your order for a full refund at any point.

    You will receive a confirmation email with your product details once your order has been successfully placed. We will also contact you in due course with updates on production schedules and estimated delivery times.

  • 5.5 Missed out? Join the waiting list

    Customers who are unsuccessful in securing a pre-order are encouraged to join a waiting list for possible returned items in their size. This could either come from people cancelling their pre-order before it arrives or returning one that is still in perfect condition. We will never send out marked or faulty items and customers will benefit from our full returns policy.

    An option to join the waiting list will be available on the product page once pre-orders close. You can also find a link for the waiting lists at the bottom of our newsletters.

  • 5.6 Why don't we just make more?

    There are a number of reasons why we limit our production run for each collection:

    Waste
    Overproduction in the fashion industry is a major issue. Every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is sent to landfill or incinerated globally. We therefore limit production and ask people to pre-order their correct size to minimise unnecessary waste.

    Quality
    Our products are made in Britain using traditional labour-intensive methods. This results in a limited number of garments produced to the very highest standards.

    Logistics
    Our fabric is made bespoke for each collection. This process starts many months before pre-ordering and production begins and we cannot increase the quantities at a later stage.

  • 5.7 Can I cancel or modify my pre-order?

    Pre-ordered items are made to order and we do not carry stock. If you wish to cancel your order or modify the size then please email info [at] faeroes.co.uk as soon as possible.

    Once your order goes into production the size can no longer be changed and you will be issued with a full refund instead. Please make sure to consult our size guide carefully before placing your order. The size guide for each product can be found under the ‘Size and Fit’ tab on the product page.

    Cancelled orders will be offered to members on the waiting list.

  • 5.8 Can I return my pre-order?

    Customers can cancel or return pre-ordered items at any point up to 28 days of accepting delivery and receive a full refund. Please see our returns policy for more details.

    Items bought through our selected stockists should be returned to the store, in accordance with their own returns policy.

    All items, whether bought in store or online, benefit from our lifetime repair programme. If you are unsatisfied with your item in any way then please get in touch by emailing info [at] faeroes.co.uk so we can arrange a solution for you.

  • 5.9 Can I exchange my pre-order?

    You can let us know if you would like to exchange your pre-ordered item for a different size although this may not be possible if production has finished, in which case a full refund we will be provided instead.

  • 5.10 When will my pre-order be shipped?

    An estimated delivery date is indicated on the product page for each pre-order item, usually between 4-5 weeks.

    Shipping estimates cannot be guaranteed and should be taken as an indication only. We will update you with more accurate shipping times once production has started.

  • 5.11 Payment methods

    We accept all major credit cards including Visa, Mastercard and American Express, as well as PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

    Our website is encrypted with the the most advanced technological coding system (SSL) and payment data is collected through PCI-compliant servers and the latest 3D Secure checkouts for maximum protection.

6. Stockists
  • 6.1 Selected stockists

    As well as offering pre-orders online, Faeroes is happy to work with a number of selected stockists who carry items from each collection. These are listed below by destination:

  • 6.2 Availability

    A limited number of units for each collection will be allocated to selected stockists once online pre-orders have closed and production has finished. These items will be made available at the stockists’ discretion.

    Stockists are guaranteed a full range of each collection but will not be able to order more products after production has finished.

  • 6.3 Prices in store

    Prices in store will be significantly higher than online to reflect the associated costs of high street retail. Prices may vary depending on time of year and availability.

  • 6.4 Returning in store purchases

    Items bought through selected stockists should be returned to the store, in accordance with their returns policy. Please see our own returns policy for items bought directly online at faeroes.co.uk.

    All items, whether bought in store or online, benefit from our lifetime repair programme.

8. Care & Repair
  • 8.1 Lifetime repair programme

    We offer lifetime repairs for all our raincoats, whether bought online or in stores.

    Repairs due to wear and tear will incur a minor fee to cover postage and materials. Please email repairs [at] faeroes.co.uk and we will be happy to assist you.

    Should a product be irreparable, we offer a recycle programme to utilise any available fabric and credit towards purchasing future products.

  • 8.2 Waterproof

    All our rainwear is 100% waterproof with fully taped interior seams.

    We use a material called bonded cotton that contains an impermeable natural rubber membrane placed between two thin layers of cotton. Unlike Gore-Tex and other performance materials this waterproof cotton fabric does not require retreating and will remain waterproof for life.

  • 8.3 Natural rubber

    Both the bonded cotton material and waterproof glue are made from a natural rubber solution which carries a distinctive scent.

    When unboxing your new rainwear this will be particularly apparent and is part of what makes your raincoat a genuine mackintosh. The scent will soon fade once left to hang.

    Avoid high temperatures such as radiators, fires, and hot-water pipes as this may damage the natural rubber.

  • 8.4 Storage

    To maintain the appearance of your raincoat please observe the following:

    - Air dry naturally when not in use, especially before storage.
    - Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods of time as this may bleach colours.
    - Do not store folded as this may leave visible creases. Instead store flat or hanging.

  • 8.5 Cleaning

    Cleaning should be carried out infrequently and by hand only where required:

    - Do not dry clean or machine wash.
    - Small stains should be spot removed with a little soap and water.
    - Use gentle pH neutral soap, never spirits or other harsh chemical cleaners.
    - If it is necessary to wash the whole coat, run a bath with tepid water and wash gently with soap.
    - Remove any water collected in the pockets and hang to drip dry naturally.
    - Do not iron

  • 8.6 Warranty

    We offer a 3 year warranty on all our products. In the unlikely event of a manufacturing default please email repairs [at] faeroes.co.uk and we will work with you to assess the issue and cover any expenses where necessary.

    Repairs made outside of this warranty still benefit from our lifetime repair programme, with a minor fee to cover postage and materials.


9. Shipping & Returns
  • 9.1 Shipping times

    An estimated delivery date is indicated on the product page for each pre-order item, usually between 4-5 weeks.

    Shipping estimates cannot be guaranteed and should be taken as an indication only. We will update you with more accurate shipping times once production has started.

    Once shipped, items will be delivered within 1-5 working days depending on your location in the world.

  • 9.2 Shipment tracking

    You will receive a tracking number via email and / or text as soon as you parcel has been shipped. You can use this number to track your shipment via dhl.com

    If you need to change the address or give DHL specific details you can do so directly with them, once you have been sent your tracking number, or with us before then.

    Deliveries will occur during business hours from Monday to Friday, holidays excluded. If the parcel is not deliverable on the first attempt, the courier will attempt to deliver it again two more times before being returned back to us.

  • 9.3 Import duties and taxes

    Shipping to Europe, United States and Japan is DDP (delivered duty paid) meaning that customers will not be expected to pay any additional costs.

    Shipping to all other countries is DDU (delivery duty unpaid) meaning that customers will have to pay any additional import taxes and charges required by their country at customs. Please note we cannot undervalue orders or mark them as a gift. If customs charges are refused at the point of delivery then Faeroes will be liable to pay these and will deduct the charges from your final refund when the item is returned to us.

  • 9.4 Returns policy

    Customers can cancel or return pre-ordered items at any point up to 28 days of accepting delivery to receive a full refund.

    Returns are free and should meet the following criteria:

    i.  Have been purchased directly from faeroes.co.uk. Items purchased through selected stockists should be returned through them in accordance with their own returns policy.

    ii.  Returned items should be in pristine condition with original tags and disposable seal in tact to be eligible for a full refund. Please do not remove the original tags when trying the item on.

    iii.  Returns should be sent within 28 days of receiving your item.

    In the unlikely event that your returned item does not meet these criteria then we will be in contact directly via email to arrange a solution. For more information please see our Terms of sale.

  • 9.5 How to return your item

    Once you have checked that you meet the returns criteria listed above, please use the following instructions to return your item:

    i.  Repackage your item in the original packaging taking care to fold the item along the natural creases and joins of the garment.

    ii.  Tape the package securely and, if returning from outside the UK, mark clearly as ‘Customer Return’ on the outside of the box. Failure to do so may result in additional customs duties that will be deducted from your refund.

    iii.  Email returns [at] faeroes.co.uk with your name and original order number so we can locate your order and send you a pre-paid return label.

    iv.  Print off the return label using the link in the return confirmation email and contact DHL to schedule collection of the package or drop it off at your local DHL service point.

    v.  We will email you to confirm that your refund has been made once your item has been received and checked. Please retain your postal receipt until you have received this confirmation from us.

    If you decide to return the product without using the free DHL label supplied by Faeroes, the return shipping costs will be at your expense and will not be refunded. In this case we advise you to entrust the return shipping to a secure courier and retain the receipt as proof of shipping.

  • 9.6 Refunds

    You will receive a confirmation email from us once we have received your return and checked that all the criteria have been met.

    The amount will be refunded back to the original payment method and can take up to 7 working days to process, depending on your bank.
